What Makes Dark Side of the Moon Such a Classic?

Updated: Mar 12, 2021

Pink Floyd released Dark Side of the Moon in March of 1973, and the album was immediately cemented as a cornerstone record album, with a cover recognizable by many who may have never even heard of the band!

One of the Biggest Albums of All Time

Think about what kind of an impact an album has to have to achieve this level of fame! Dark Side has sold over 45 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best selling records of all time, and was certified 14x platinum in the United Kingdom.

What's Your Favorite Floyd LP?

Die Hard Floydians? Floydists? Pinksters? People that like Pink Floyd! may have another album as their favorite. Perhaps it's the unique Syd Barrett led Piper at the Gates of Dawn, or maybe it's the Roger Waters focused concept album The Wall. But no matter which album may be someone's favorite, no other Floyd record has ever reached the status of Dark Side of the moon.

The Artists Behind the Cover

Dark Side was, like other Pink Floyd albums, designed by Hipgnosis, who if you haven't heard of them you'll be surprised to learn how many classic album covers they designed. Besides all the other Pink Floyd albums, Hipgnosis also worked on album art for Led Zeppelin, Bad Company, 10cc, AC/DC, Genesis, Black Sabbath, Electric Light Orchestra, and many many more!

A Classic for Years to Come

Even though it's approaching the 50th anniversary of its release, the album is still just as popular as ever. You'll find it in most people's lists of top albums, and practically everyone, this side of Patrick Star, recognizes the album cover and probably a couple of songs. Money and Time are two of the biggest staples on any rock radio station and two of the bands biggest hit singles of all time. Pink Floyd caught lightning in a bottle, or color in a prism, in 1973, and prog-heads and rock fans around the world have rejoiced ever since.
